I suggest this as a P1 bug for the release.

the released version requires mercurial to fetch trace repositories and fails when mercurial is not installed.  IMO, one of two things is needed for ease of use:
1) release traces are included in the released version
2) wget instead of mercurial is used to fetch the release tarball

Option 1) would make the ns-3 release 2MB instead of 1MB, but would work without any network access.  At this point in the project, I think option 1) would be worth the extra file size, to improve user experience across the board.  In the future, if regression traces swell, we can move to wget.
